Arizona has some of the strongest gun laws in the country. As a constitutional carry state, you can legally carry a concealed firearm without a permit, but an AZ CCW permit still matters. In real life, not in theory. AZ CCW class is still one of the smartest decisions a responsible gun owner can make.
People are often told, “You don’t need a permit in Arizona.”
That statement is true, but incomplete.
An Arizona CCW permit provides advantages and benefits that constitutional carry does not.
Interstate reciprocity
Your AZ CCW permit is recognized in dozens of other states. Without it, your legal right to carry often ends at the state line. An AZ CCW permit does not override other states’ laws. Reciprocity tells you where you can carry.
Local law tells you how you must carry. Failing to understand the difference has real consequences.
Faster firearm purchases
A valid AZ CCW permit satisfies the federal background check requirement. That means no phone calls, no delays, and no surprises at the counter.
Expanded carry locations
Certain locations, including establishments that serve alcohol, operate under different rules for permit holders versus non-permit holders.
Most people do not learn this until after a mistake is made.
Favorable treatment with Law Enforcement
AZ CCW permit holder receives more leniency when interacting with law enforcement, whether a self-defense shooting or a simple traffic stop.
To qualify for an Arizona CCW permit, you must meet state and federal requirements. In plain language, you must:
Be an Arizona resident or a U.S. citizen
Be 21 or older (or 19 with qualifying military service)
Not be a prohibited possessor
Not be under indictment for a felony
Not be adjudicated mentally incompetent
Not be an unlawful user of controlled substances
Complete approved firearms safety training
Training is not a formality. It is the gatekeeper.
Arizona requires proof of firearms safety training approved by the Department of Public Safety. My AZ CCW Class is $60 per person.
This is where shortcuts cause trouble.
A proper 1-hour AZ CCW class covers:
Use of force law in Arizona
Where carry is legal and where it is not
What changes when you cross state lines
The legal aftermath of a defensive encounter
Responsibilities most gun owners are never told
The goal is not shooting skills.
The goal is keeping you out of jail.
Arizona CCW Class is a 1-hour Class via mobile training at your home or via live Zoom.
After training, your application packet includes:
Completed AZ CCW application
Two fingerprint cards (FD-258)
Copy of your training certificate
Copy of government-issued photo ID
Money order (or certified cashiers check) of $60 to AZ DPS
Errors delay permits. Omissions get applications rejected.
Applications are mailed directly to Arizona DPS:
Arizona Department of Public Safety
Attn: Concealed Weapons Permit Unit
P.O. Box 6488
Phoenix, AZ 85005-6488
Processing can take up to 60 days per state law. I personally recommend to have a tracking number (via certified mail) to have peace of mind that it got delivered.
New AZ CCW permit:
$60 money order (mail applications)
$67.45 Credit Card (online applications)
+ $10.25 FieldPrint Digital Fingerprints
Renewal AZ CWP:
$43 (mail application)
$49.88 (online renewal)
Permit length: 5 years
Renewals do not require repeating the class, but laws change.
Knowledge fades.
Confidence without clarity is dangerous.
